As a player, I lean heavily towards role playing. Beating goblins to a pulp and dodging inventive ways of causing TPKs might serve as a decent diversion, but it's not likely to hold my interest for very long. I love the chance to actually get creative while playing - to try and get into my character's head.
That's not to say I don't enjoy some good combat, but there's a pretty distinct line between that and simple hack 'n slash. Combat isn't interesting if it's without context, atmosphere and/or tactical challenge. Still; at the end of the day, I wouldn't play in a campaign consisting purely combat, while it wouldn't even occur to me to complain about one that consists purely out of conversation.
I play a wide variety of characters, though I tend to find it difficult to identify with those that belong to the overtly religious classes (ie; paladin and cleric). Most of my characters tend to be placed around the "neutral" side of the alignment spectrum, rarely touching the "extremes". Lots of them have some pretty curious personal philosophies despites this, though - a sorcerer with urges towards deicide, a barbarian who believes combat is the quintessence of life and a druid who would probably cause the average tree-hugger to faint.
That said, I can have just as much fun playing a Gnomish accountant.
I have only begun DMing very recently, but you can probably tell a lot about my attempted style from the above. I hope. My aim is to combine the atmospheric and highly immsersive style of some DMs I've had the pleasure of playing under with the more freeform, player-empowering style of others.
