As a player I attempt to create characters that I enjoy, characters that have a sense of depth and story to them that isn't necessarily all revealed in a single sitting. For some I enjoy creating mysteries that are explored throughout the on going play, and for others I enjoy a solid background with overall established roots.
As a DM I find that I scope my campaigns and worlds towards environments that I would want to play in as a player. The power levels are controlled, the focus on the role play is high. However, I also understand that some players just aren't interested in (or perhaps just aren't good at) roleplaying, and thus I always attempt to have an openness that makes the play session enjoyable for all types of players, without catering to only one or two select individuals.
