I'm the sort of DM who likes to run games that provide challenges for the players amidst their goals. Surprises where I can, and mental as well as combat obstacles to keep the players guessing as well as their characters. I try to incorporate parts of the characters' backgrounds to make the story apply to them somewhat personally: also, lethality is absolutely needed. I like my players, but need them to know how dangerously foolish adventuring really is! Add to this the typical plot-twist or dramatic revelation and insight that lets the players choose how their characters win or lose, live or die: we all end up having fun somehow. :)
---------------
As a player, I very much try to look at the DM's presented world from the character's point of view. It's not easy, but I've played all sorts of races, classes and both genders for variety and insight. It's helped. I can indulge in a temptress of Bane, or a Warlord Drow of Vhaeraun, or a Dwarven Loremaster from the Snowflake Mountains. The downside being that when I get attached to the character, I hate to see its woes or death, as I tend to empathize with the character's plight. Also, such focus can limit how I perceive the other players... I'm so busy being the character, I miss cues once in a while as to their characters' subtleties. I'm still learning, and have been playing roleplaying games since 1981. I don't see an end in sight, either: my game is always improving.
