I greatly prefer campaigns that evolve around character development and that take unexpected twists and turns based on creative character actions that introduce new ideas to the game. of course, DM's with the creative ability to provide such a campaign are as rare as hen's teeth and i have utmost respect for them. Basically though, i'd not be happy in a campaign that was pure Hack 'n Slash or pure Monty Haul. On the other hand, surviving a difficult battle partly due to well thought out strategy and tactics, and being rewarded for the effort with a satisfying bounty of treasure is such an intrinsic part of RPG'ing that I'd not be happy in a purely RPG campaign either, if it failed to recognize that.
I tend to prefer Good aligned characters, partly because Evil characters in general don't fit well into most campaings unless you want to play the role of someone who tries to sabotage the party at every step, while hiding your true self from the party. that's quite a role-playing challenge to pull off, and i'm not comfortable enough with my ability as a player to try to pull it off just yet. most all evil campaigns strike me as just an excuse to hack and slash to hearts content, and don't interest me. playing a neutral character that is primarily a mercenary out for self-profit might be interesting, but having more than one of these in a party tends to cut into the game enjoyment, however, so , as i said, i tend to stick to Good aligned charry's.
something you very seldom see, however, are campaigns, or even single adventures, that explore lawfullness vs. chaos. i'm currently thinking about the possibility of building a module that takes that approach, and if anyone who sees this happens to consider running a game that takes that approach, i'd love it if you invited me as a player. such an approach might actually allow good and evil characters to co-exist in a party without damaging the role-playing possibilities if it were handled just right, and would certainly be a rather unique adventure!
There's a lot more I could say, but since few will ever read this anyway, i think i'll stop here.
have fun and happy adventuring! :)
