I'm a fan of both hack and slash and roleplaying, depending on mood. I used to play a lot of D&D, GURPS and a free-form system that a friend wrote. I'm back on NWC after a long hiatus and very keen to be involved in some more games though not sure if I can commit to a long-term campaign at the moment.
My first few sessions on NWC games have convinced me I have a real love for roleplaying and characterisation, so if you want characters with substantial backstories, come to me!
I particularly like playing characters with some kind of flaw, or something interesting or tragic which happened in their past which they are struggling to come to terms with and living a normal life. I prefer Good-aligned characters, as I find this the most straightforward to roleplay and easiest to identify with.
My favourite character by far from past sessions has to be the lovable Jay Wrekin, a middle-aged sorcerer with an adorable pixie familiar called Sianie. Many a session was spent frantically switching back and forth between the two of them for some enormously entertaining RP.
I firmly believe a good DM is someone who is willing to take on board the things you tell them about your character, their personality, their history and work some interesting twists into their campaign or adventure which gives the character a moment of "glory". The PnP freeform system I mentioned previously was particularly good for this, as our DM insisted we provide him with substantial character backgrounds and he worked the whole campaign around the somewhat motley crew that made up our party - a half-elven warrior from the near future, pursued relentlessly by mysterious men who sought to take advantage of his mystical origins (that would be me, then...), the Luggage from Discworld (surprisingly handy in a fight), an animated suit of armour, an mysterious amorphous blob of pink mist which seemed to devour or possess passers-by at will, and on one memorable occasion, strangled a dragon from the inside, and a fallen angel with a penchant for becoming large and flamey. Obviously it's a little more unlikely a NWN game will become quite so bizarre, but I like to think I'm ready for anything the DM (or my party, for that matter!) would like to throw at me :) That doesn't necessarily mean my CHARACTER is...
So you can see I enjoy a variety of styles. I LOVE "epics" in particular. I loved the sessions I've had on here prior to now... big thumbs up and cream cakes to Scorpio60, Le_Frog and StarStuff for running fab new player sessions and adventures.
I'm currently learning the NWN Toolset... slowly. One day I might even pluck up the courage to DM something!
