I decided it was finally time for an update to this profile, especially after four years.
I was playing Pen and Paper around age 11. By age 16 I became interested in DMing. To this end, our original group would trade off roles of playing and running adventures, often throughout the course of a single campaign.
Neverwinter Nights originally sparked my interest as a builder, but that quickly grew to playing with the introduction to Neverwinter Connections. Many of the characters I play were P&P characters I developed. I enjoy the two extremes of role-play: Either a character with an extensive background, or a character with little to no background who is then improvised based on the circumstances of the campaign.
Around 2004 I became more daring and decided to try my hand at DMing once again. With one shots or short-term games (most of which are conversions from paper modules) I build within the scope of the adventure and let the group explore it. Occasionally, they become -very- side tracked, which may result in a small amount of Star Wars-inspired DM intervention (only happened once, I swear!) to restore focus, especially due to the short timespan of these short adventures. In campaigns, I build as open-ended as possible and do my best to give the players free reign. I lay out a loose idea of what I intend to have happen, but leave it up to the characters to determine the how of the actual events. Often, they lead themselves to events entirely different than planned, but that's what makes it fun. ;)
Recent Thoughts:
* DnD Chivalry isn't dead, it has just moved to a more visual medium. * Gamers don't grow old, their characters just start growing younger. Seriously, I've just come to realize that more and more of the characters I crafted years ago with ages that once seemed unnatural and unattainable, have now become younger than me. I suppose I'm not the sixteen year old I used to be when 23 year old Keldares was born. Alas. At least Ariosh is 43, which gives me pleanty of time.
After all, playing younger is akin to reliving the past. Playing older is still an adventure.
