I played PnP games for years as a player and sometimes as a DM. One thing I came to enjoy, especially as a player, was the interactive creation of a world with the DM. This requires a lot of flexibility on the DM's part, as well as having a good idea of what can and can't be changed to reflect input from your players. Some of the best DM's I have ever played with required background information from their players. Fears, hopes, dreams, and significant events in the past of each character all go a long way toward weaving plots that will involve each player in the group. I've also found that spontaneous contributions on the part of players can sometimes make for an interesting, more intricately varied, and often humorous campaign world.
