As a player, I tend to be focused on roleplaying. You can always hack-and-slash when you're on your own. When you're with other people, role-play! Although I must say that standing around pretending to be an elf doesn't strike my fancy either. I try to be as helpful as I can, giving other players assistance in the form of healing, buffing, or cover. However, this depends on the character. If my character is selfish and cruel, he will be somewhat less helpful. He is not stupid, however. He will still help when needed, even if Chaotic Evil in Alighnment.
I realize that a group is more than the sum of its parts, and attempt to act accordingly.
I have not yet been a DM, although I have DMed in pen and paper games for a while and currently GM a Vampire: The Requiem game. DMing is something I plan on looking into, at some point, on NWN.
