I generally play characters whose lives are not going horribly wrong. I like to see them progress in a story, heroic or otherwise. Almost all of my PCs are female, because that's what I am and I feel I do the best at playing from my own point of view genderwise. Many of them have married or formed some other permanent relationship with a PC of another player, and some have had children.
In my four years of playing at several large and well-known worlds, as well as at some smaller ones, I have experienced many kinds of RP, some of which I would rather not experience again regardless of the quality of the performances.
I have only ever "discarded" two PCs, and then only for the reason that they could not be made to fit in any other world than the one they were made for.
I can generally hold my own in a combat event, but I don't have the reflexes of players half my age, nor the temperment that goes along with that. Pure H&S is not something I enjoy on a regular basis. CvC is something I have finally learned to just say "no" to when offered, regardless of how IC it may be.
I am fairly new to DMing. I have learned what I know by watching others from the standpoint of a player. I am trying to emulate the ones I have most admired over the four years I have played NWN online. I try to treat players as I wanted to be treated. It is the role of the DM to play Evil in the world, in order for the players to have dynamic targets for their PCs. However, both DMs and players are co-operating in the effort to write stories and have fun.
