My major emphasis is storytelling. Roleplaying is a big part of this, but roleplaying by itself can be just a "chat session." I also need a little bit of adventure and progress in a module to keep my interest. Likewise, mindless hack-n-slash is not my style. I want combat to be rare, meaningful, and dangerous.
As for characters, I like playing distinct personalities. Whether this is a stock fantasy type (the dour dwarf, the stupid half-orc) or an unusual type (the servile human fighter, the elven barbarian), the important thing is having a personality formed well enough to stand out from the group. I don't think I have a particular race or class preference, but part of "standing out" usually involves finding a race and class that is not over-represented in the party.
