Schatten9 DMd us through a new module he was playtesting. The Mysterious Tower is a nice module with some interesting features. The DM did a fine job keeping things moving and adapting given there were two no-shows amongst the players. I would have given a higher "fun" score if we had more players - there were definetly some suspensful moments as we worked our way through the tower!

This game was played using a mod of the vault, "The Mysterious Tower".

Schatten9 did a fine job getting this game started once initial technical issues had been resolved. DMing was light-handed but there when needed. An excellent touch - fun game with good RPers!

Some suggestions: I didn't think the ghost town was fleshed out as much as it could have been, and I thought there could have been more npcs providing some sort of "glue" to the world, and more of an opportunity for our group members to bring out some personality (especially since some of them are used to running around pws). That being said, I had a lot of fun exploring the world, and I'm looking forward to another session.

[Schatten9's reply to comment: Thanks for your comments (I only wish the person who scored me before you had the courage to back up his scores with reasons! Seeing low scores helps me improve only if I know the reasons behind them!) I appreciate your feedback and I agree, a lot of the module could have been more fleshed out with NPC's and story. I threw the mod together in 2 days and was excited to do what I could as DM to flesh it out, since I didn't have time to program it. Glad you had fun!]

If its like he said and he put this together in a few days it was amazing. For a custom / or home grown module it had many of the charecteristics players love. I enjoyed it, and will be watching for more of his games to participate in.

I really had a lot of fun with this game, and I'm looking forward to further sessions. I liked the way the different characters really had a lot of personality, and I wish there were more of them. I like the way that we weren't force-fed through a plot at all, and it felt like we really *were* exploring without any particular goal in mind. I thought that experience gains were right where they should be, and we got exactly as much XP as we should. I really enjoyed the items that have no intrinsic value, but really added to the roleplaying experience, and I look forward to more of them. But I thought that the "currency" treasure (gold, gems) was a little excessive: If I randomly found about 1000 gold worth of stuff after raiding a small goblin camp, I'd go straight back to town, sell it, and live fat and happy for a few months.

[Schatten9's reply to comment: Thanks for your comments. Aha, now I'm seeing why I got such low ratings on treasure this past game! My random treasure generator must have put a lot of valuable items in the goblin treasure chests, though I stocked the area-treasure chest that the script draws from with some low-level stuff. I'll have to look into it. I appreciate your complaint, it's quite valid, and I'll try and adjust my goblin treasures. Thanks!]

This was my first experience with a DM'd game via Neverwinter Connections, so view my ratings above accordingly.

I really enjoyed myself in this game. Having a (good)live DM beats a scripted module hands down (IMO). I look forward to returning to this particular game (we convinced the DM to schedule another session) to continue my character's

[Schatten9's reply to comment: Thanks, I had a great time as well. It looks like your review got cut-off somehow. I was hoping to have an explanation for the "2" on treasure (ouch, 2?!)...maybe we can talk about this later. There was plenty of treasure to be found, but so far nothing extremely valuable, so maybe that was your complaint. After all, you have only fought with goblins, and they're not known for their riches.]

I forgot to write a comment for the first half of the adventure, so I'll include bits of that here. Overall, I had a blast. Given that I have no basis for comparison, Blackburn Hollow being my first online game, I still had tons of fun. Schatten allowed great backwards mobility in terms of random suggestions from characters, and provided a good plot with appropriate monsters. There were some parts that had me wondering whether or not my party would make it through to the end, but we managed in the end. Ultimately a good adventure, and great for a beginning-online player like meself.

How I've missed playing in one of Schatten's games. He always presents interesting ideas in his modules, gameplay wise and plot wise. I liked especially the bats flying through (then disappearing in the distance), the voices on the wind, and like various other neat scripted visuals that are virtually a mine for me to comment on humor wise (quite badly, I'm afraid - but I'm having such fun doing so). :) I also appreciate how all his games are usually a healthy mix of hack and slash combat and roleplay. I've learned to appreciate the merits of roleplaying, but I also like the thrill that good 'ol combat provides. Looking forward to Sunday.

Bravo!! Another fine show!

Even though I am a late commer to the campain, I (player and Character) was instantly drawn into the plot. The other characters were great to not trust the new guy that just happened upon them in the underdark.

I truely cant wait for the next session!!

[Schatten9's reply to comment: I'm glad you enjoyed the game! Sorry about the one crash we had last night--it seems the web spawning place-ables I had everywhere overloaded the server when combined with so many spell effects from the enemies and the wizard. That was the only time I've ever had server trouble.]

Great job! It can't be easy not knowing the group size from week to week, but you do an excellent job trying to keep the encounters as balanced as possible.

This campaign remains very interesting and I always enjoy your personal scripting touches like us becoming vegepgymies....argh.

Great campaign thus far, looking forward to our next game.

Well, the Regulation tradition of multiple deaths continue! ;-P Not your fault though since you did expect that we would have melee support, but for some reason or other, we always end up with just an archer and a mage. Liked this session for a couple of the moral dilemmas presented for the party such as the desert folk/water issue and the goblin worker (I swear the arrow slipped!). Again, not much NPC interaction this time, but I think it's because we blew up most of them. *evil grin* Well, not counting Quissel who is probably the most despised NPC character of this story, but yet we still work for the man! How twisted is that? See you next week. :)

07/14/04 8 10 9 5 9 8 9 10 8 8
More of a hack and slash episode this time around...unfortunate for us since we only consisted of an archer and a mage with their summoned henchmen. I thought the DM did the best he could with trying to balance the game with only two players that were not traditional melee. I do not seem to remember any NPC's this time around, so I didn't grade for that. There was an interesting twist to this game and despite the aesthetic appearance of it, I wonder what further consequences are there gameplay wise? I hope we learn next week!

One of my most favorite DM's. It is impressive how he runs his games by himself, but seem to pretty much smoothly with interesting storylines and monsters. The only problems is when we have to fit the games in everyone's tight schedules! He is also always trying to improve on his own technique and solicits feedback constantly. This is a DM who cares about his players and tries to make the game fun for all.

Great game!!!! Loved the weapon sticking to the creatures. Nice touch : ) Again one of the closest games to PnP yet. I would like to slow down the pace with the other PC . This game is like good wine...no need to rush .

This session seemed to allow us more freedom to use the roll checks...or maybe I, as a player, am just asking more often this time around. As always, I enjoy these Regulator sessions and having DM'd myself once, find it amazing you're able to pull all this off on your own: build, do player interactions, oversee battles... I'll forgive the duergar mage bolt of death. ;) My goal is to make it through one session without dying. :P

Great game!! I am so glad I signed up. This game had a real PnP feel to it. I enjoy when the game is slowed down and rolls come into play . With the pace of the game it gives both DM and players time to think outside the engine . I am already looking forward to next week.

I've really enjoyed this series thus far. The idea of the "regulation" as a launch pad for future adventures in the campaign is a very interesting and unique concept. Little by little the personalities of each member are becoming apparent and it keeps it interesting using them as part of the launch pad into the adventure. As always, you do an excellent job bringing your NPC's to life.

I've liked the content you have included from the CEP Hak, it has been well placed and has fit well with your story. The only downside is that I do not know what is in the CEP hak so I apologize if I don't give you credit for the stuff you made vs the hak as your stuff is top quality as well, I am unable to tell who created it ;)

Again, great adventure & great fun. You always keep me on the edge of my seat when I play and you enable me to get truly into the game.

Fantastic. I really don't know what to say. Schatten9 has never run a bad game. Always guaranteed to have a great time! Only issue we had was some pathfinding problems and a very minor glitch in a conversation. Part 3 is shaping up to be the best in his Regulation series so far. I'll be back for my weekly fix! :)

Another enjoyable night of adventuring had by all! You do an excellent job DM'ing espescially as you have to continually adjust to the number of players. So far all three signed up players are yet to play together *groan*. Well done on managing to keep the difficulty reasonable for our party. I find most encounters keep me on the edge of my seat as it seems that we are at times barely escaping with our lives...

I also liked how you threw in the beholder hak to ad a variey of monsters, you always manage to throw in a few suprises to keep us off guard.

Great Job, as always, looking forward to next week!

Beholders are definately one of the best creatures in NWN! Mind you, when the Rust Monster ate my rapier I was pretty choked! Great elements, were put together to make the best use of them. My favorite was the cave-in. It truly needed sound to have the desired effect, but once we realized rocks were falling on us, and boulders dropping from the sky, we started running! Requires a little bit of tweaking for challenge, but the adventure is there. Great job as usual Schatten9!

Heya Schatten! Is it really fair to review a game that one has already played before? Come to think of it... I can't remember if I reviewed you the last time. Hehe...my bad. As always, your creatures are very interesting. The Regulators are an intriguing group of ... beings. I hope to see how the characters' backgrounds and the main story arc tie in overtime. I'm also anxious to see how you use the CEP. I liked your rune puzzle, of course. ;) Of course... I liked it the last time, too! See you Monday!

Great game, I'm enjoying these "regulator" missions, or rather tolerating them until my full potential is realized and I rule all of Faerun!! WUHAHAHA! Wait, I think I'm Neutral evil so please strike my last statememt ;)

Seriously, well done. excellent story thus far. I liked the group of ruffians waiting for us outside the inn after I had intimidated one trying to collect "taxes". The coversation back and forth was fun, how dare they challenge the Great Rysto Waylittle! Looking forward to next week to continue our foray...

Fantastic job as usual Schatten! Well planned module concluded smoothly. Many unique and creative creatures and challenges without requiring any haks. Not much more I can say except, keep up the great work!

Another excellent game! I truly enjoy the way you bring NPC's to life. The interaction between Dervish (The Red Dragon Disciple) and the guards was top notch. I like how a bunch of them came running over to quickly put an end to the disturbance he was causing, simply by being himself.

Your modules are always well designed and you managed to maintain game balance even though you had planned on three of us up until one player backed out at the last minute.

A well run game revolving around a well made module....couldn't ask for anything more.

03/22/04 8 10 9 10 10 8 8 10 8 10
Once again a fantastic job! Schatten9 really brings NPC's to life and can run with what the characters are doing and change things on a whim. Great module as well. His creativity and imagination come alive in the well thought out story. If you haven't already, sign up for one of Schatten9's games, as you won't regret it. :)

What can I say, your games are always great. Even with a tight deadline to put this one together, it still went off without a hitch. Great plot and story, I like the idea of the regulation. Interesting way to springboard characters into a variety of adventures.

01/23/04 9 8 9 8 10 8 10 9 10 9
I can't believe that you put this module together in just two days! There were a lot of cool scripted elements that looked like they took a lot of time to create. You ran the game in a fair and balanced manner for the group we had. The lack of music was a bit strange at first, but like you said, after a while it added to the immersion of the story. Great job again.

Fabulous adventure. Great length for an intro to a series. Lots of unique, innovative creatures. I still love the Ethereal Ooze! Our players worked well with each other and we had a great time. Schatten is a very fair DM who's main goal is a smooth, progressive story. Once again, can't wait for another session. Good job Schatten!

  -=The Regulation=-

If this DM has a free spot in his games GRAB IT!

Wonderful adventure, this guy has a talent for creating interesting stories to place your character into.

He's a spot on DM also...his NPC's had personality and were not all the same guy. He created custom monsters and all were unique and interesting to battle. I don't know if he was able to choose his players but the group was wonderful. Everyone knew their role and played it well. I could go on about all the fun I had but...I hope I got the point across by now.

01/14/04 8 9 10 7 10 8 5 7 7 9
Great game again Schatten! Good mix of party characters lead to an interesting night. Lots of new creatures that kept us guessing. I especially liked the Ethereal Ooze! Can't wait for next session and the anticipated sequels!

01/14/04 8 10 10 3 9 9 8 6 8 8
Overall I enjoyed the game. The DM kept things lively and moving, and the other characters were fun to play with. I also liked the custom creatures -- very fun.

Some specific improvements I would recommend: The NPC's were very one dimensional. They did their part to further the plot, then got out of the way. They could use a bit more life. Also, some of the battles could use a bit of tweaking. Especially the shadow creatures on the ethereal plane. Frequently characters will get sent there by themselves, and often be fairly wounded when they arrive. The shadow creatures were too strong and too many, they attacked without much warning, and it was even more difficult given the disorientation from teleporting, plus the fact that the only thing we'd seen there before were nuisance creatures.

[Schatten9's reply to comment: Some expressed after the game that they think it is a sin to have pre-scripted conversations with NPC's, but until there is a conversation wand that allows me to fire off large chunks of text, it'll have to go this way. There wasn't any opportunity to develop those NPC's after their conversation, either, since they immediately teleported after talking. Deaths on the Ethereal Realm were due to party separation and players insisting on staying and fighting (against challenging odds),]
01/09/04 9 8 10 9 8 8 7 10 8 8
The game was fun, even tough we mostly died through the adventure :). In my opinion, the main things that made it hard were three. The first two were things you didn't have control over, so you don't need to worry about them :).

1) We were short one player for most of the adventure.

2) The two characters who started out were fighter-types without any supernatural ability or resistance.

3) The equipment carried by the characters wasn't very appropriate to resist the special abilities of a few of the monsters , such as the mind flayers. There were too many mind flayers, and so they were able to quickly incapacitate both characters (with their low Will saves) and kill them. The Abyssal Ghoul gangs were also a bit of a problem, since one of them always managed to perform a sneak attack on one of the characters.

01/09/04 9 9 10 9 10 9 10 9 10 10
Excellent work again on some very inventive creatures. We were a little overpowered in most cases, but that was due to the fact that we were running with only two players most of the time. The DM does a very good job at setting the scene for the players, and giving proper background for the players to work with. The creative story coupled with the inventive creatures made for a very fun evening of adventuring.

12/16/03 10 10 10 10 10 9 10 10 10 10
Great job! I had a lot of fun playing through this module and I'm sad to see it end. I thought you did an excellent job of keeping the encounters well balanced for our party. You kept the game moving, only giving us hints when we stumbled past something important to the plot & even then you made good use of the

Very good game, immensely enjoyable. Overall fun 10, easily.

I understand that this was just a test run of the module. I suppose that feedback is appropriate, so, a bit of treasure to start with would have come in handy, and removing the level restrictions on items would have helped as well. I mean, it's a one shot adventure, so finding magical weapons that we can't use might be a tad redundant.

And.. well, basically, I suppose that all of the criticism I can turn towards this game originates in the fact that it's not part of a bigger campagin, and I just hate it when a good thing gets cut off when I want it to go on :)

[Schatten9's reply to comment: I agree about the item restrictions concerning tonight, because I'd recently toned down the xp given during the mod (my previous group leveled up way too fast and it was a walk in the park for them!) I should have adjusted a couple of those items, too, my fault, sorry. :) I had a blast running this adventure, and you were all great players!]
12/14/03 9 10 10 8 10 9 8 5 7 9
The plot (creature-infested mine) was somewhat classical, but there were enough twists to the story (the nature of those critters, and the powder kegs) to keep things fun and interesting. This was a very challenging adventure, that would require commando-level tactics to go through without suffering significant damage. As it was, we took quite a few licks, but it didn't detract from the fun at all. It was exciting knowing we could really die at any moment.

[Schatten9's reply to comment: Thanks, I had a great time running this adventure! Things were tough, and the challenge was steep at times, but you all handled it well and role played it effectively. I'm wondering about the 5 in stability--I'm not aware of any problems with the server during our game...maybe you forgot to fill that one out or confused the DM pauses with server problems? ]

The story is definitely keeping me interested. The module has been well designed and everything seems to be consistent and believable with the story-line. (No random out of place creatures, etc..)

Your NPCs are still quite good and I like the personalities you give them.

Please continue the good work it is well appreciated.

Another great DM'd game! A good time was had by all I believe. Great use of your personalized creatures, I always enjoy facing something unexpected. One suggestion I would make would be to maybe tone down the treasure a bit in certain areas. I'm not sure if there is a lot of treasure in those spots or if no one else is picking any up ;) Hey, I know I'm a rogue and all but I do try and wait before picking up treasure... Great game, looking forward to the next one!

I enjoyed this DM and the story he has written in this mod (although we have not finished it yet so I hope it continues this way). It is a nice balance between both an interesting story and fighting. A well done mix of discovery and combat.

The DM did not get the same chances to take over NPCs as he did in the first session (in town), but he still excelled in this area with what he did have to work with. He is quite good at improvising.

I would definitely play in another game by this DM.

Most Excellent! I had a great time playing through this DM'd adventure. You did well to try and keep the game as balanced as possible with us down to 2 of the 3 scheduled players. The encounters were challenging and required quite a bit of strategy. Thank the Gods the giants had a big lair with lots of room to move around ;) I liked how you appropriately placed a henchmen type character in the module at the last minute as a prisoner, to give us a slight reprieve. Thank you...and also in this same fashion when our third player finally did show up you used this clever move to seamlessly add him to the action. Well done. All I can say is that I had a great time and look forward to our next adventure!

I'm sad to see this one end, but what a grand adventure it was! You did an excellent job bringing Min Soo, our henchmen NPC to life, and I savored our victory over her in the end. The story was top notch as was the use of your custom creatures. All in all a great dm'd adventure. Looking forward to our next one.

Another fun Neverwinter Thursday ;) I truly enjoy your DM'd games. You roll with the punches well. Even when the factions didn't behave as planned and one of your NPC's unexpectedly attacked a party member, you still kept the game moving. We eventually had to reload, but the role-playing and character discoveries that went on during those unexpected events made the whole session for me. I was laughing so hard at the noble dwarf who, once again had the bad luck to be the one to kill the guard...and then his lamenting about it afterward. I'm starting to think he is cursed ;) great game, lots of unexpected twists (for all of us, including the DM) looking forward to next thurs.

Fun mod, well DM'd. I like when you roll certain skill checks for listen and spotting for instance. You kept the game flowing and you always do a good job of bringing the NPC's we run into to life.

Nice selection of a Hak, that Remorahaz thing rocked. As for my lower score in challenge my only comment would be that a couple of the battles overwhelmed us. In your defense however, some of that was our fault. As we rushed into combat.

I had a great time, I truly enjoy your DM'd games, looking forward to the next one.

[Schatten9's reply to comment: Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed last session. I agree, some of the battles were overwhelming, especially the ice toads. I'd forgotten how many were actually buried in the snow there and had manually spawned in a couple too many! The displacer beasts, though, I'll have to agree were your doing, but it sure was funny seeing you run back to join the group, trailing a couple of displacer beasts behind you, only to arrive and discover your party already engaged in battle with three more.   Quite a good job, was a hard thing on the dwarf in the game to loose his fathers axe, but it played through...

[Schatten9's reply to comment: You did a great job role-playing the loss of the axe, thanks! I'm wondering what problems the previous reviewer (MachoGrande) had with the game, though. The scoring seems a bit unfair in my opinion, especially considering that he didn't have the guts to back up his scores with any constructive criticism. ]

Excellent game last night. You do a great job of possessing the creatures I'm fighting. However, those damn druegar aren't suppose to run and get re-enforcements, they are supposed to stand there and die damnit ;) Well thought out story to this module, my only suggestion would be to drop a few more subtle hints about the story. I got the feeling the kids running around were ghosts, when he seemed like you were leaning more towards young vampire types. Maybe give them vampiric touch or something? Again, great session. Looking forward to you DM'ing again!

[Schatten9's reply to comment: Actually, the children were ghosts, but yes, a bit more explanation on the story end would help. When it's multiplayer, I manage to drop enough hints in, but with single player, it was a bit harder considering it would break up the game-play most of the time. I enjoyed DMing for you a lot!]

Great job. Your modules continue to impress me. Excellent scripting, exciting new (upgraded) monsters always make it fun. Even though this was just a Beta test, I still feel it was worth a review simply from the amount of work that goes into making this kind of quality module. Your monsters are simply amazing! Damn that displacer beast is tough! And to think you were kind enough to throw four of them at me, how thoughtful ;) Excellent work with the tendrils coming off of them and the inability to hit them when displaced, great work. However, those little crawling bushes still get high marks from me. I don't know how you made them, but they sure look cool crawling around. Again, a fun night, and I expect this mod to get nothing but better...

Beautiful once more. Great session- full of roleplaying. I hated the stinking riddle *stews with intellectual insecurity*, but it made for great fun. I've never felt so connected with a character as when my heart sank when Daryk failed the test. Great fun! IJ

This game keeps getting better and better. Granted, the earlier overdose of treasure resulting in one HECK of a bank roll since we were finally able to sell...but I get the feeling we're going to need all of the new equipment just to survive! It was terrifying seeing everybody turned into mindless, salivating zombies except for myself...I guess that's just a boon of being an animal spirit. ;) I can't wait to see where things go from here, with the wicked amounts of intrigue that are flying around!

This certainly made for an interesting game, though it suffered from some balance issues...but hey, we live and learn, right? Playing pure evil was amusing, especially when cutting down children at 50 paces with throwing axes...this game made for criminal amounts of fun overall. ;)

Challenge was way better this time around...those fire toads gave us a real run for our money! Loved all the custom creatures you added from Oriental Adventures. Smelled the Bog Hag a mile away. ;) The treasure is still a bit much, but I think that's because everybody drops EVERYTHING they were using...I'm packing a few Cho-ku-nus and an arsenal of unidentified armor/weapons! :P I absolutely love this game Schatten, and can't wait for next time!

I really liked this game. The design was unique as was the plot. The NPCs were very interesting. I also liked many of the costumes that were used on them. I had a lot of fun, and I am looking forwarding to seeing more from this campaign and this group. I think we have a good group here. Great job DMing. Thank you for a fun time! :)

I realize this was only a test, but I still had a lot of fun playing through and therefore felt it was worth a review. Thought you did an excellent job possessing the NPCs (so well in fact, it took me a moment to catch on that they were speaking to me...I walked away as the little boy was trying to tell me something). Seeing the various haks at work, despite some of the technical difficulties, made this a worthwhile adventure. Damn that beholder is scary! it's voice shall haunt my poor wizard's dreams forever.....

This game was great, he did everything right. From jumping to NPC's at the right time, describing feelings for us, and little things like dripping blood, and hearing sounds, he ran the game flawlessly. The MOD had a great feel to it, and the mood and environment were fitting and richly detailed.

Great game, I had a lot of fun. I to give out numbers without explaining them, so here we go! The Game Design was excellent, I was very impressed with many of the innovative little things found throughout the adventure. i.e. Howler Quills, varied traps, etc. Great use of tracking, though some player reactions lead me to believe that more than just the Ranger is getting the specific information from time to time. The forest with the undead was a bit large and empty, but that's a minor complaint. Play was for the most part nicely organized, though what was going on occasionally wasn't clear (could be just me). Plot refresher was a big help. Not much to say about objectivity, the DM was certainly very objective. NPCs were conceptually well defined. I'm not a big fan of non-DM controlled NPCs, but I'm not letting that affect my score. As for Fun, I had lots of Fun, so I scored accordingly. It seemed that we were getting mostly treasure that was too powerful for us to use. Seeing as this was the last session, so now we'll never use it, perhaps a look at the level limits would not be unappropriate? Bit of a Monty Haul too, but then I was never good with treasure when I DMed either. There were a lot of very good mid-range encounters. Nothing seemed too easy, but some of the hard encounters were definately way too hard. There were three encounters that were plain out instant-kills. I'm all for difficulty diversity, but it got a bit silly. Might want to play around with the difficulty slider, unless of course you wanted us to die ;) No stability problems whatsoever, excellent server. Plot was well thought out. Circumstances with the first game (Mainly players scrolling through the NPC conversations too fast for the others to see) made it a bit fuzzy at times, but that wasn't the DM's fault. Great plot. Overall, I had a lot of fun. It was a great experience, and I'd certainly play with this DM in the future. If you see one of this guy's games, apply immediately! You won't be sorry.

An excellent DM in creating a world that the player characters can easiliy become immersed in. Through open narration, perfect balancement of fights between story/interaction, and a unique resting system this DM makes for an highly entertaining roleplaying game. (JD)
