Where to begin...
For one the game takes on a Hack and Slash
model that I think the DM‘s are largely unaware of. So...with that in mind barking orders is probably completely warranted.
Also, given the fact that the party is largely unorganised I would say being straightforward in terms of combat tactics
is completely necessary.

Now, in terms of why there is no true leader...and in my mind no BIG, in terms of roleplaying, Kimiko is trying to be the Leader, but not doing a very successful job. I think her comments were strictly not IC. Even her compliments were strange.
Her manner of speech for someone out of Oriental Adventures is completely wrong.
Its like we have a Sarg for an Officer.
Its depressing and completely unmotivating.
This is just my opinion. And to be taken with a grain of salt. But mind your Ps and Qs next time.

I especially admired the gracious way in which she stepped aside when her leadership role was usurped; very in character. Up to that point she had shown all the hallmarks of being an excellent leader. Gets my BIG.

[Starkadd's reply to comment: lol Simply because I arrived first on the search for Novello's farm, Novello made Kimiko the leader of the party. After that, Novello acted accordingly. His only fault was to not explain it to the others :) ]
