Born a bastard child to a poor, sickly woman in a small town, Mariel has never lived a comfortable life. At the age of five, she found herself completely parentless when her mother succumbed to a wasting disease. She bounced around between staying with the small family she still had in the town and staying with whatever benevolent souls she could find to give her a roof and a meal. But always she yearned to leave the dirt-stained walls of her hometown and the heartache it contained behind.
It was at the age of 12 that Mariel started to realize that she was different. Whenever she was in need, Mariel found that she could summon some magical energy from the world around her and shape it to perform her bidding. With practice of these skills came a greater confidence, and eventually she booked passage with a merchant caravan to the big city.
It was at this city that Mariel met Drake Emerys, an older boy that soon become her friend. Drake watched over her as an older brother and guided her away from danger and evil influences. Still, her life was far from pampered. Only with a grim determinance was she able to navigate her life through the streets of the city and emerge relatively unscathed.
But now, at the age of 19, Mariel is again feeling the urge to leave her current life behind. Drake has struck off on his own, traveling the lands as a ranger and Mariel feels that a life on the road is her destiny also.
