Kel the Shiv

Kel the Shiv, (Rogue/Sorcerer) grew up an orphan, living on the streets and surviving on what he could steel. He became a member of the local thieves guild at the age of 7 and for several years lived by his wits practicing that profession. One day he decided to go after a bigger, and hopefully richer, target. In the merchant district lived a sorcerer named Falta Jhaal. Rumors had it that he came from the eastern desert, and brought great riches with him. After several days spent casing the house Kel made his move. And was promptly caught by the sorcerer. Instead of turning Kel, now 16 years of age, over to the authorities, Falta Jhaal took him in as an apprentice, sensing the aura of a sorcerer about Kel. Kel thrived under Falta’s tutelage and soon had learned how to channel his raw talent for magic in a controlled fashion. One day Falta Jhaal sent Kel out to buy some spell components. On his way to the market Kel came across some of his old companions in the thieves guild. After some good-natured teasing Kel agreed to demonstrate his new skills. While he was concentrating on the magic, one of his “friends” pick pocketed the money Falta gave him for the spell components. Angry at the betrayal, and even angrier with himself for falling victim to such a scam, Kel decided that he would ply his old trade rather than return empty-handed to Falta. Just as he was making his getaway, spell components in hand, the shopkeeper blundered into him. Kel tried to break away, but the shopkeeper was too strong. Kel drew his dagger, thinking to scare the old man into letting him go. The shopkeeper did not react as Kel expected and instead tried to wrestle the dagger away from Kel. During the struggle both crashed to the ground. Kel finally broke free and jumped to his feet. The shopkeeper did not rise, but lay still in a widening pool of blood. Kel panicked. He was sure someone would remember him coming into the shop, and he had also told his so-called friends where he was going. In light of the fact that they had robbed him, he could not trust that they would not turn him in to collect a reward that was sure to be posted for the killer. Seeing no other course of action open to him, Kel left town, boarding a ship before even knowing where it was heading.
