Collis Forgeborn
The forge was the warmest place in the village that ice-cold winter. Collis was born on the anvil, the colour of the fire in his wisps of red hair. His parents were pleased: to be forge-born means luck, and grand things in a child's future. They were Burakti woodsmen, making their living logging, trapping and hunting in the thick forests out back, and Collis' childhood was spent under the eaves of those trees. He learned the forest trails, keeping the cold nights at bay with nips of honeywine from his father's flask. He was always fascinated, even obsessed, by the oral traditions of his homeland - the tales told around the fire, the folk-wisdoms his grandmother shared over her knitting, the tales of foreign lands brought be passing peddlars. Collis put together his world from these bits and pieces, a patchwork quilt of hearsay, rumour, common-sense and the impossible. The older he got, the more itchy his feet grew. He yearned to see the places he had heard about, to be there when history was made, to meet the heroes of tales. He felt the world calling. In the end his wanderlust grew too great. He left home with his parents blessing (they always knew he'd set out some day to seek his fortune). Having heard of the King's old age and illness, he went towards Quarim Topet - that's where the new songs and stories are going to be made, and Collis is going to be ready for them.
