Vilo Pidash

Vilo Pidush was born the child of a human slave and a warrior witch-doctor of Yurtrus. She never knew her father; he was as unspeaking and non-communicative as the orc God he worshipped. Her memories of him are that of a stranger: she remembers his white gloves he wore as a mark of his calling and the respect and fear he was shown as the tribe's representative to the god of death and disease.

Her early years were spent with the other half-breeds, as a slave. It is there that she learned her place in the tribe, and to show proper servitude to the men of the tribe. "If Gruumsh intended females to be the equal of males then he'd have given them bigger muscles", as the warriors were fond of saying, especially in her presence.

Vilo began to show her true calling when another slave girl was on the verge of dying in childbirth. Her limited knowledge of medicine was enough to keep the girl alive until the shaman of Luthic arrived. He was impressed with her skill, and took her for his apprentice, to learn the ways of Luthic. Under his tutelage she knew the teachings of the orc Goddess of fertility, caves, dark places, female servitude, primitive magic and healing. She was above the human and half-breed slaves, but she still knew her place.

As a journeyman she was sent with an orc raiding party to keep them alive and maintain orcish morale. Things were going well, except one of the captive was sobbing over the body of a wounded girl. The woman plead in the slave tongue for someone to help her daughter. Vilo could understand the human's words from her own youth. The orc warriors taunted the human woman and laughed at her despair.

Vilo called upon the power of Luthic and healed the girl. The orc warriors were shocked at her transgression. They promptly killed the girl-child and the mother, and then brought Vilo back to the tribe for judgement. Her act was not the will of Gruumsh!

The chieftan echoed their displeasure. But he did not keep his position as leader based on strength alone, he had some wit about him and knew that physically killing a shaman was a good way to get himself in trouble with the gods. Instead he scarred her with orcish runes to tell all she was an outcast. They chained her to a rock on the surface. The chieftan spit into her gaping wounds, and said they would come back to free her when 'White Hands speaks'. The God Yurtrus is always silent.

After several days of exposure, she woke with a splitting headache. She felt like she was a recipient of one of Bahgtru's pats. Before her was a strange apparition, it seemed to be made of darkness, and its presence drained what little warmth remained in her body. Without a word it removed the chains that bound her, and then it vanished from sight.

Shaking her head in confusion, she looked at the scars upon her body. Then she turned her back on her home and walked out into the world.
