It was the depression, years after the city had won its republican victory from the bleeding hands of its oppressors, Duke Tan Blacks and his encompassing Duchy.
Surrounding the halfling State of BallinDoob Blackwater, which spanned the river of that name, the Duchy bled the wealth and the sweaty toil of the working BlackDoob ( coloquial resident of the city )backs, riding on their prosperity, and warming their feet on the BlackDoob's misery.
After the great liberation the streets sang, for partial to it they were, and the celebration saw no end.
Into this jaunty fray sprang the strength, poetry and voice that is Finnegan Barry Gomicheale. "North siders can't sing" was the sure start to many a tavern brawl for the competition between south and north of the town was fierce - yet Finnegan strode across all quarters of the city. Not a tavern did he pass without the songs of the heroes who won the fight, bursting forth from his throat in glorius praise for their mighty redemption. For he would be noted as being the main reconteur of this time of change, bearing witness to the glory and passing to the youth of tomorrow....taking the tale to other repressed lands!!
Trouble is, the Duke..well, just left them alone, too much of a burden for his taxes, this lot given more to enjoyment of profit than making it. He made a show to make sure they knew he didn't want to have anything else to do with them despite their acute position as a port..somehow things got confused, the BlackDoobs -if you would believe them- routed the duke out of their city (which he built) with a holy vengeance.
Now things have dried up in BallinDoob Blackwater, the Taverns are quiet, they don't really know what to do with their new found "freedom" and, ...erm no money.., no-one wants to listen to the glory songs of Finnegan anymore..
A wannabe revolutionary more caught up in the dreams of it and song than the actual reality - most of the liberation Finnnegan instigates is a few swift ales from their glasses. A warm hearted character with disregard for control, except to use it to his goals Finn has set out to discover riches and mediate for his home state across the land.
