But as he grew older, he found that his focus on academia had left him bereft of the social popularity amongst his peers. He grew sullen and his performance in school began to worsen. His family and few friends began to worry about him, but he would speak with no one on the subject.

Then, on that one fateful day, a human girl was enrolled in the school under exceptional circumstances. As rumor had it, she had been orphaned at a young age and adopted by a renowned elven wizardess. Meifong Moondaughter, as the girl was called, proved to be the only intelletual rival to Lumnus and was soon very popular among the other students.

Lumnus was at first infuriated that she could be blessed with both plentiful friends and an intellect as sharp as his. Determined to prove himself the smarter, he increased his efforts in his classes tremendously and soon found himself the top student in the academy once again.

Lumnus was feeling quite proud at the end of one class, in which he had delivered bitter defeat to Meifong in a debate. He was surprised then, when she approached him in the hall and congratulated him. He had expected her to be angry, but in fact she seemed quite impressed with him. The two then began speaking with each other regularly and became close friends.

As time went by, Lumnus found himself falling in love with Meifong. For weeks he argued with himself about whether it really was love he was feeling for this person he wasn't even of the same species. Eventually, he decided that he truly loved her and had to tell her. He strode anxiously to her room to confess his feelings for her, but was stopped at the door by an explosion coming from within. Throwing open the door, he found her lying dead on the floor. The only other thing that could be recovered from the room was a small locket with a tiny, magically created picture of Meifong and the words "To Lumnus, with Love." inscribed in it.

Lumnus attended her funeral, but never returned to the acadamy. Suspected for the murder, he had been expelled and told never to return. He could not face the shame back home, so he gathered his meager belongings and fled his hometown which he had never left before. Now he wanders the world, waiting for whatever destiny has in store for him.
