Sable knows little of her own origin. As a young girl, she was found wandering in the woods with no memory how she got there. The human townsfolk who found her named her Sable for her long, coal-black hair.

Recently, Sable's voyages with the crew of the Wave Rider have wrought changes in the young ranger. For the first time in her life, she's among a group of people she trusts and cares about. Sable's penchant for solitary wandering is suddenly conflicted with an unfamiliar desire to protect and serve. Worse, her new companions have been lacking leadership, and more and more Sable finds herself thrust into the uncomfortable role of providing it...
