Kerewin Hake Kowhai
The symbol of my people is the Kowhai, a tall, thin tree with grey-brown bark. It blooms in the earliest part of spring, with flowers that the tui and korimako love. It likes coastal areas, and lets its seeds fall into rivers and the sea. And they are carried to other beaches so the kowhai blooms throughout the land. The sea-tree is the symbol of my people. I took the name Kowhai after my initiation. My shaman mentor, Mogati, tells me we must learn more about the Pakeha, the other peoples of the world. They are not of the children of Ha Ata, the great founder, and we have shunned them for generations. I am to walk among them, live with them, and learn of them, then go back to Mogati and tell him what I have learned. I am Kowhai. The sea-tree. I serve my goddess. I serve my mentor. I serve my people.
