Billy Bumpershoot
Born in the less fashionable ghettos of the Shire, Billy grew up resenting his fellow halflings who lived in relative ease and luxery while he toiled away in the field. With his muscles strengthened by years of clearing rocks from Farmer Giles Hamm's field, the stout little halfling caught the right eye of the One-Eyed Jaques, ringmaster of a traveling circus. After a few coins were exchanged between his gaffer and the circus, Billy was sold into indentured servitude for a period of seven years. He made a few appearances in the side shows being billed as the "Strongest little man west of East Thumbria" but most of the time he spent working as a roustabout and shoveling oliphant dung. His moment of fame came when Igon the Knife Thrower gave his buxom young partner, Helga, the "nine month flu". Lacking a target during the show, Billy was made to step in; a nerve racking proposition considering Igon's propensity to drink and increasingly apparent case of glaucoma. After a hurled dagger and dart got too close to his lower extremities one humid Autumn, Billy turned the tables and threw the knives back at Igon, with startling results. Minus one knife thrower, Billy was made to take over Igon's place on the travelling show where his keen eye and natural dexterity made him a sure crowd pleaser and lucrative act. His seven years of "apprenticeship" over, Billy left "One-Eye's Travelling Extravaganza, Menagerie and Miscellaneous Miscreants" and set out on adventures of his own, leaving the limelight, crowds and demands of five children sired from a now slightly sagging Helga behind.
