richard strives to be the perfect knight; he is dedicated to the ideals of chivalry and honor. he is also a dedicated patriot. he loves his king and is utterly loyal to him. the slanted remark about traitorous dogs has hurt him deeply, and he wishes to prove himself. things take a twisted turn, though. if i'm reading the synopsis correctly, the knights meant to go arrest the cleric and if any executing were to be done, it was going to be after due process of the law. now richard's two highest values have conflicted: while he's performed a service for his liege, he's also gone against his code of honor. erm, if that isn't too pretentious. :)
