Sir Athol de Leon
Sir Athol de Leon (as he now calls himself) spent most of his life as a humble cobbler making elegant boots for fashionable ladies. When his fingers got too old to do the fine stitching required of his trade, he retired and began to vegetate on the front porch of his cottage, getting closer and closer to death. Then one morning an apparition of a shining woman hovering on silver wings came to him. She told him that the world was filled with evil and that a courageous knight was needed to save it. She said that at the base of this evil was a guild of dragons who were kidnapping young maidens and 'borrowing' their souls. Only by destroying these dragons could the souls of the maidens be returned to them and the maidens set free. The apparition informed him that he alone had the purity of heart to hunt down and kill all the dragons, releasing all the souls back to the captive maidens. Of course, she said, it will take many years to track down and destroy all the dragons and that there will be many evils to defeat along the way. He must confront and defeat evil wherever he may find it and this will weaken the power of the dragons. Only when he has removed all the evil put into the world by the dragons will he be able to defeat the last, and greatest, dragon of them all, Ixelopithicus. He immediately agreed to undertake the great quest demanded of him by the apparition. He made himself some rather ill-fitting leather armour, bought an old rusty sword and some supplies and hit the road. Sir Athol lives in the world of his own mind. He sees and hears perfectly, yet what he sees and hears are not what others would see and hear. His mind bends everything to fit into the world that exists within his head. He might see a humble shack as a great castle or a shambling ogre as a mighty dragon. He is accompanied in his journeys by a retinue of characters that only he can see. There is his fiancee, the beautiful Gwendoline, who he rescued from a dragon's cave after slaying the fearsome beast. There is Simon, his faithful squire, a kobold whose life he spared when wiping out an army of 1000 kobolds single-handed. There is Romulus, his Baldacaran war horse, who he took from the Black Knight after defeating him in epic battle. Last, but not least, there is Remus, a wolf that he adopted as a whelp after slaying its deranged and possessed mother to save a village. You get the picture ;)
