Gryst Fellhammer

Gryst Fellhammer was claimed by no man when he came into the world and to keep him from being owned by any man, his mother left him, a mere babe in swaddling, at the gates of Torhaven, the Fortress Temple of the Brotherhood of Moltvar. The Moltvarian Brothers raised the boy until he was an age where he could serve the temple and earn his name. He was put to work in the mill yard grinding grain. The Clergy of the Brotherhood provided basic lessons in letters, numbers, history and the worship of Moltvar to all the children that earned their living in the Fortress Temple. It was during these lessons that the Brothers began to take note of Gryst and it was not long after that he was inducted as a novice into the Brotherhood. To Gryst, a fatherless boy that new nothing beyond the massive granite walls of the Temple, it was a dream come true. The Brotherhood of Moltvar was a martial sect, which is only natural as Moltvar is a god of War. The Brotherhood was a society of warrior priests, some of whom had risen to true Paladins of the faith, and a clergy that, through their religious dedication, could call forth divine magics that could be used in battle as a powerful force for either healing or destruction. The Brothers taught, in accordance with the tenets of their faith, that True War was not about chaos and slaughter, but instead it is a natural extension of being. It is a tool for dispensing justice, for opposing evil, for bringing order and for forging strength, discipline and integrity into the man’s soul. This is the world that Gryst was brought into and attacked his new life with a determination that quickly won the admiration of his instructors and his peers. Gryst developed quickly, both in his studies and in his size. As a young man, he towered over most the other brothers in the Fortress. When it came to his martial training, Gryst selected a large warhammer for dispensing Moltvar’s Justice. “A big hammer for a big man,” Brother Hengol, the senior weapon instructor used to say, adding, “He’ll be a true man of the North,” remarking on his ponderous stature and his downy red whiskers that, at an early age, promised to blossom into a thick and bristly beard. Another saying that Old Hengol, looking at Gryst with pride, was, “Encase him in armor and he’ll never have to swing that hammer, his foes will take one look at him and flee for their lives.” Although said in jest, Gryst never forgot it and, at his first opportunity he acquired a large shield and had the Temple armor smith make the best suit of mail that he could. It was this image that earned him his informal appellative when a cheeky first year initiate, late for lessons and running out of the dormitory into the practice yard, when he burst from the dimmed interior into the bright of day and ran full into Gryst who was wearing his new armor and holding his warhammer and shield. The young initiate rebounded back into the doorway and landed unceremoniously on his arse and looked with dazed eyes at the huge shape silhouetted by the mid-day sun standing before him and immediately fainted. Later, when his senses had returned, the lad said, “I thought for sure Lord Fellhammer had come to claim me,” evoking the name of the children’s tale hero. The Elder Brothers found it so amusing that they, in good fun, would often call, “Good day Grist Fellhammer,” when he passed by. Needless to say, the Weapon Masters were not so amused when, at the age of choosing, Gryst decided to forgo the more physical training of becoming a full Warrior Priest and instead chose to follow the more spiritual training of the Clergy. Gryst knew, however, that it was the right choice for him and, while the more sedate lifestyle might have contributed to the noticeable belly he developed, a few modifications to his armor kept him looking as fierce as ever. Gryst, as with all the Brothers, spent many years away from Torhaven serving in various armies for Moltvar. You see the Brotherhood, unlike most other religions, only had one Temple and it was the Fortress Torhaven. And any leader, be he common or noble, could come to the Fortresss and petition the Brothers for their support for whatever cause he had, so long as that cause meant war. The Brotherhood would question the petitioner closely and, if he proved true and his cause just, they would commit themselves to it, by providing warriors and clerics to serve in the petitioner’s army. In this way did Gryst travel the realms and gain stature as a Cleric of Moltvar. He fought, healed and brought the wrath of his god against his foes, whichever was needed most. He was at Dagger’s Point when the undead hordes of General Xrish poured from the sea and he stood at Pallen’s Bridge when King Falji removed the head of the invading ogre King Skragg. After several years of campaigning for the Brotherhood, Gryst returned home to Torhaven for a well deserved sabbatical. He had planned to take a year or two and return to his studies and to spend time teaching the new initiates. At least those were his plans… For over two centuries the Brotherhood and Torhaven had stood in the North as a symbol of justice. In all that time, the Brotherhood had also gained a number of enemies. The most virulent of all were the assassin priests of Yffectri, a god of discord and murder. More than once were the malevolent plans of the Yffects foiled by an army containing the Brothers of Moltvar. So it was not surprising when an army of villainous humanoids, manipulated through guile by the Yffectri priests, marched on Torhaven and laid siege to the mighty fortress; nor was it particularly concerning to the Brothers. Torhaven was a mighty fortress, protected by both secular and holy defenses, and it had survived many sieges throughout the centuries and by far greater foes than those arrayed before them at this instance. Little did they know that the Yffects had made a dark pact with the unworldly demonic shadowfiends and, with their allies the Yffects were able to do in one Tolarian night what had not been done throughout the long existence of Torhaven. It was late in the evening and Gryst had just complete vesper services with a group of young initiates when the walls of the Temple were breached. Before most of the Brothers could don their armor or take up their weapon, the defenses were overrun by sheer numbers and dark, deadly magic. The slaughter was massive, but it was not complete. Those priests, warriors and clergy, that survived the initial onslaught soon realized the hopelessness of defending the Temple. While some stayed and sacrificed themselves in a rearguard action, others made their way through portals that transported them to relative safety. The remaining Brothers were too few to oppose the evil forces that had claimed and defiled Torhaven and they knew that if they remained together the Yffects would marshal their forces against them again and again until not a Brother remained alive. So the Brotherhood decided to disband, but each of them took with them a task that would keep the faith alive until one day when they could reform the Brotherhood of Moltvar and reclaim their Fortress home. It has been ten years since the fall of Torhaven and Gryst has traveled far and wide in those years. He has encountered more than a few Yffects and has always come out alive. He has also maintained his sporadic contact with his other former Brothers and still seeks to accomplish his task. While others of the Order have continued to recruit and train new priests or have established alliances with righteous men, the task that Gryst has chosen is to acquire the funds that will be required to restore Torhaven to its former glory. Much of the time, Gryst has spent with various adventuring groups in search of a forgotten horde of treasure buried in some long-forgotten crypt. And while some of those adventures have resulted in a fair bit of loot, none have come close to the type of funds that Gryst needs. When he does find some small amount of treasure, Gryst is usually quick to pass it to another Brother that can keep it safe until the time when the Brotherhood can be reawakened. Now Gryst, as he has done several times since the fall of Torhaven, has found himself in a mercenary company; ready to serve in whatever campaign that can hire their services. He does not have the luxury to place his loyalties with only the most noble of causes anymore, but under difficult circumstances, he remains faithful to Moltvar and serves him as best he can.
