Once a very pleasant, normal child, Kazuma''s childhood was disrupted and altered sharply when his town was raided late one night. His childhood innocence caused him to open the front door upon first hearing the strange noises in his street. What occured after that he has yet to speak of, though it is not difficult to guess. What he has rarely spoken of, involves several years of back alley fights, stealing from vendors, and sleeping in sewers.
The people who have said they saw him fight back then described him as something a barbarian bezerker, attacking wildly and recklessly, as if channeling his rage from something. His "darker" years...as he calls them, almost came to an abrupt end when the gang he had fallen in with was attacked while making a trek between towns (it has been noted that while he does enjoy the arts of evasion, he has no compassion for muggers and thugs).
The attack left young Kazuma dazed and wounded, and any of the people who had traveled with him had since fled or died. It was not long after, that an old traveling monk happened upon him. Thinking the bandits had finally come to finish him off, he attacked with what the monk called "unbalanced anger". Though the monk easily defeated him, he then offered to teach Kazuma to control his anger. Rather weakened, hungry and tired, he accepted.
The training that followed has created a somewhat strange duality in his actions. Though no longer reckless and easily provoked, his anger still seems to get the best of him at times. His training as a Monk has both given him a means to unleash his rage with, and a tool to overcome it, something he deals with each day.
