Beneath his condescending and demeaning exterior, Krahl really is just condescending and demeaning. However, despite his own special way of putting people off, he is a skilled wordsmith, gifted in the art of persuasion, and a master manipulator. These skills are augmented by the cadre of Enchantment spells that the Red Wizard has memorized at any given time. Though he truly does feel that all others are beneath him, he's smart enough to realize that he cannot do much of anything on his own, and is therefore willing to lend his services to lesser beings.
