Hold Tannesen
So, ye''d know of my past, eh? Well, I warn ye I''m no bard, so the story won''t be a thing of song or verse. But... I know that I was loved by my parents, and that I suspect I was an unexpected blessing to them. The youngest of 4 boys, and 4 years behind the closest at that. My parents are mostly feelings or voices of warmth and comfort, since I was taken. (I''ll be getting to that, never fear.) My eldest brother is more an uncle in what I recall, and the middle brother is little more than the name - Ty. ''Tis my youngest brother, Milos, I remember most clearly. I just wish what I remembered wasn''t youthful cruelty...I pray to Athena for him. ''Twas 12 years I lived with my family. I know this because the priest came for me shortly after my birthday. Why I was chosen I don''t remember. But I''ve had no doubts of the Wisdom of the choice since my Initiation - which I still remember quite well. My life at the monastary was, I think, typical of many Novitiates. Although, I find that almost all of my memories of those years (nearly 5) involve one prank or another. Seems I was quite the trickster...even after I was Christened. You see, "Hold" isn''t the name I was born with. The old Abbot gave it to me out of exasperation following an ''incident'' involving a bucket of water, a door, and another priest. (At least the water was blessed.) The Abbot decided that, since I''d come to know that particular spell so well - from the receiving side - that I might as well use it as my name. He was a kind old man, so I''ll keep it in him memory. Now, as to being taken. This time is one of few clear memories, and given the choice I''d forget those I do have. Suffice it to say that there was an attack, most of us at the monastery were killed, and the rest taken into slavery. Forgive me the short shrift given this time - I grieve those lost yet. *sigh* What followed was 3 years of misery, mostly spent chained to a bench with an oar in my hands. Save for meals and sleep, that is where my fellow slaves and I spent our time. Well, truth be told, I was allowed away from my bench if my few healing talents were needed. This is why I chose to study such different areas - healing and war - to help those in need and give vengeance where deserving. Fortunately, my Lady Athena has helped me stay away from the consuming rage that threatened me at first. And I must also thank Her for my current freedom. It was my inability to heal the foreman that lead to my meeting a senior healer just before out ship set out that last time. She taught me more of Divine magic than the simple cantrips I had known - surely Athena graced me with wisdom to do so so quickly - and told me of a vision from Athena. It was this vision that kept her from trying to free me, for I had another path ahead of me. I have since met you, my friends. Although I do not know what Athena intends of me, it seems to involve all of you. Which is why I sometimes wonder about that storm, and the monster, that destroyed the ship - but brought us together.
