The Smythe family farm was spread out over a great distance in the plains between the Western Heartlands and the Dragon Coast. One day the orcs attacked, killing Brandon Smythe, and his eldest son Preston. His youngest son Terrance was hiding in the trees, as his mother distracted the raiders with her body.
Nine months later a half-breed bastard child named Brendal Smythe was born.
For Brendal, Terrance, and their mother, life was hard, it was difficult to raise the crops and sustain the farm without the experience and strength of Brandon Smythe to guide them. At one point when times were particularly difficult, Brendal actually had to serve as the plow-horse.
In order to cope with these difficulties at the farm, Brendal became a devout worshipper of Chauntea, the Earth Mother. He went to the nearby shrine every week, and every weekend he would plant a seed in her honor, and say a prayer over it. For surely he and his family would need her help for the crops to grow in enough to feed and clothe them for another year.
All of his life Brendal grew up hating his orcish side, he hated orcs for the life he lived, and the one his mother and brother were denied when Brandon Smythe was slain.
When Brendal was in his early twenties, his mother came down with a deadly disease, and she passed from Toril very quickly. No longer desiring the life of a farmer, he and Terrance set out for the grand city of Suzail, capitol of Cormyr. Unable to hide his orcish heritage; his dialect and intillegence saved him many times by making it obvious that he was raised by humans and not his more beastial bretheren. He joined The Purple Dragons as a raw recruit. It was good that he did this for war was brewing between Cormyr and the a mass of orcs and goblins, and the dragons needed all the help they could muster.
During the battle where the great King Azoun was slain by the mighty red dragon, Brendal was felled by a goblin spear through the back.
While in the Fugue plain, awaiting Chaunteas messengers to come and collect him, or Kalemvors citedal if she did not deem he worthy. Her messenger did come. Only she had a message that Brendal did not expect. She told him that his mission was not over yet, and he needed to return to Toril. Furthermore he had to leave the purple dragons and take up his sword in the name of Chauntea as a paladin. He would show his strength and good heart off by doing great deeds in the name of The Grain Goddess.
Brendal awoke on that battlefield, while the priests were searching for survivors.
While Brendal was, and is still to this day unsure if it was a dream, or reality, he has done as Chauntea''''''''s messenger requested.
But he still hates orcs.
