Orphaned when an orcish raiding band attacked the Shield Dwarf settlement that was Halfdan''s birth home, he was actually raised by humans. The orcs had taken the infant dwarf, in the hope of fattening up the newborn to use him as the key ingredient in dwarfish soup sometime later. But a party of human adventurers attacked before that came to pass. Halfdan''s human parents did not realize at first the child was dwarfish. They dubbed him Daniel. But as he grew, his origins became evident. He was derisively dubbed Halfdan by childhood playmates, who quickly learnt only to call him that behind his back. That tenacity served him well, both in schoolyard scraps and at the forge, which earned him an apprenticeship with the local smith. But Daniel''s dwarfish blood longed to sing the song of battle. So after several years swinging hammer on anvil, he chose his childhood nickname of Halfdan as the name he would gain glory under, adding the Red (a reference to his hair) in a dramatic flourish rare for the taciturn dwarf. It was while he was making his way to the Sword Coast region of Faerun he became lost in the Gloom...
